Why I do prefer Ubuntu
A few weeks ago in my original (Brazilian Portuguese) blog I wrote a post about migrating from Slackware to Ubuntu. Of course I could see every kind of reaction, since those who understood that I was making fun with the differences, until those zealots that — don’t aske me how — misinterpreted my text, as if I was trying to take users from Slackware to Ubuntu.
In fact, I really enjoy Ubuntu Linux, and I am going to point out the major reasons for it.
- Hardware Compatibility — on one not-so-recent desktop and two laptops, it was a breeze to install Ubuntu, and on the first laptop had already failed: Mandriva, Slackware, OpenSuse and Fedora Core 2 (I’ve heard rumors the hardware detection in recent FC versions is awesomely improved).
- GNOME — or KDE, or XFCE (everything officially supported), or any other graphic environment; inflicting me to use only KDE is so cruel!
- Incredible package management.
- Great multimedia support.
- Excellent performance
There should be tons of reasons why I like Ubuntu, but right now I would like to ask you: what is your favorite Linux distro? What’s the main reason for that preference?
Thanks a lot!

As a long-time Mac user, a true “point’n'click” user, command line has always been hard for me. A neighbor, UNIXguru at the local telecom has been raving about Linux since ‘94, and I had numerous short-lived forays into Linux land. In short, when he called up to recommend Ubuntu, I could finally feel at home with it all.
When Feisty comes out mid-month, I will install it as a grub dual-boot along with Xubuntu, cause I want to learn how work in that simpler desktop also.
I love Ubuntu because if it makes a Mac user happy then it’s gotta ready for the whole world to get off Windows and find out what user-friendly is all about.
